In therapy, first do no harm,
Life is short, art is long, the occasion fleeting.
Experience deceitful and judgement difficult.
Hippocrates, circa 400 B.C.
Safety
Acupuncture is generally very safe when performed by a well-trained, well-qualified practitioner, using single-use only disposable needles. However, in very rare cases injury may occur — less than one per 10,000 treatments. Acupuncture side-effects are also very rare, but may include drowsiness (probably from a general relaxation effect, and release of endorphins — helpful in reducing pain), minor bleeding or bruising (less than 3% of treatments); fainting; and symptoms occasionally, briefly, getting worse (less than 3% of treatments).
